This is National School Social Work Week

Students face many challenges that can impact their ability to learn. But 91ֱ��’s dedicated school social workers work every day to help students overcome those challenges and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Today, we want to give our school social workers a special thank you as we celebrate .

School social workers play a critical role in supporting the whole child by addressing mental health needs, connecting families with resources and advocating for students.

“School social workers are vital to improving student academic outcomes, mental health, and safety by bridging the gap between home, school, and community,” said Vicki Warren, LMSW, 91ֱ�� Student Outreach Services program coordinator.

As trained mental health professionals, school social workers provide counseling, crisis intervention, behavior support, and family advocacy to remove barriers to learning. They also serve as a bridge between families, schools, and community organizations, helping ensure students and families have access to the support they need regardless of their circumstances.

Their work makes a meaningful difference in students’ lives – something 91ֱ�� school social worker Judith Bazan has seen firsthand during her decades in the field.

“People often ask how I’ve stayed in the same field for over two decades,” said Bazan, LBSW, MSSW. “The answer is simple: the kids. Every day I have the privilege of sitting beside students as they navigate life, overcome challenges, and build the skills they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.”

Bazan said school social workers often provide stability and support during difficult moments in students’ lives.

“I get to be the steady presence in moments of crisis, the calm in chaos, and sometimes the one adult who listens without judgement,” Bazan said. “Learning is deeply connected to well-being, and the support we provide is essential to academic success.”

She also emphasized the importance of addressing challenges students may face beyond academics.

“Learning does not happen in isolation,” Bazan said. “A student who is experiencing anxiety, family stress, trauma, or social challenges cannot fully focus on academics until those needs are addressed. Social workers help remove barriers to learning.”

For 91ֱ�� social worker Mario Borges, LCSW, the opportunity to make a positive impact in students’ lives is what makes the work so meaningful.

“What I love most about being a social worker in 91ֱ�� is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives every single day,” he said.

Borges sees himself as an advocate for students.

“We are advocates, problem-solvers, and champions for students, especially those who may not always have a voice,” Borges said. “We help students navigate challenges such as anxiety, trauma, family hardships, and social struggles so they can thrive both academically and personally.”

The rewards of the job come from seeing students grow and reach their potential.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see a student gain confidence, build resilience, and realize their full potential,” Borges said. “Knowing that I play even a small part in that journey is what makes this work so amazing.”
