In a school district comparison published by the United Educators Association, 91ֱ�� is at the top in DFW for new teachers and teachers with five, 10 and 15 years of experience. The district is second in teacher pay in the Metroplex for teachers with 20 and 25 years of experience, and third for teachers with 30 years of experience.

National School Counseling Week is Feb. 5-9

����’s , so we’re highlighting a group of dedicated professionals who really deserve recognition all year long.

School counselors’ job description is long and varied, but it’s all in the name of supporting students. And it’s a whole lot more than helping students pick classes or apply to college.

“School counselors listen with their hearts and understand the unspoken words hidden within the silence of their students,” said Telisa Brown, director of the 91ֱ�� guidance and counseling department. “They hold a space for growth, by nurturing their students as they blossom into their true selves.”����

Their tireless work helps “ensure their students have the tools and space they need to be the best and healthiest versions of themselves,” she said. “School counselors make a difference.”

The difference they make can vary from student to student – depending on their needs – and by grade level. Elementary, junior high and high school counselors all have unique roles dictated by the age and experience of their students.

LaDonna Fields, the counselor at Fitzgerald Elementary, understands the special life stage that her elementary students are in.

“At this developmental stage, students are building the foundation to future academic and social success,” Fields said. “What makes it unique is getting to be a part of this journey and help navigate and guide them through social interactions, academic challenges and emotional development.”

No day is the same for Fields, and she likes it that way.

“Every day is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you are going to get!” she said. “Being able to guide students in their personal, social and academic growth is incredibly fulfilling. Building meaningful connections with all stakeholders is the highlight of the job.”

When students move on from elementary and hit the junior high level, many of their needs change, and with it the role of the counselor changes. There are new challenges the students must navigate, plus they have to start getting ready for high school.

“These challenges can often feel overwhelming and scary for students, and it is a joy to be able to walk alongside students during this time,” said Gunn Junior High counselor Jeff Colston. “School counseling at the junior high level is also unique because we only have these kids for a brief period of time, so it is important to make every second count.”

Colston makes sure every second does count as he does all he can to support students where they are now and help them get to where they want to go in the future.

“I get to daily play the role of encourager in the lives of students and staff,” he said. “School life and home life can be exhausting and stressful, but as a school counselor, I feel that I am uniquely positioned to be a breath of fresh air for the people on my campus, and I love getting to do that. I also love talking to students about their dreams for both the near and distant futures. I get to help students answer the question, ‘How do I get there?’”

After two quick years in junior high, students are off to high school with a whole new set of challenges and opportunities.

“High school is unique because we have so many different opportunities for kids to explore their college and career options,” said Leila Perez, a counselor at Arlington High School. “From tasting chili cookoffs to writing letters of recommendation to conducting mock job interviews, I love being part of their journey.”

����’s a journey that takes all kinds of twists and turns for each student. Everyone has different experiences, different backgrounds and different hopes and dreams.

“I love working one on one with kids to help them meet their goals, and I am grateful for the flexibility and resources to do that as a counselor,” Perez said.

Colston feels the same way.

“I genuinely think that I have the coolest job in the world as a school counselor, and I am just grateful every day that I have the opportunity to do this!” he said.

Fields loves the job, too, because of the impact she knows she is making.

“Knowing that I am doing my part to make sure our decisions are driven by what is best for kids brings me pure delight because our students absolutely deserve an advocate,” Fields said.

Our students are certainly better off because of advocates like Fields, Colston, Perez and every counselor in the district. We are grateful for you. Thank you!

School security jobs

Ivan Cazares knows what it’s like being a student in the 91ֱ��.

Cazares went to Goodman and Hale elementaries, Hutcheson Junior High and then Sam Houston High School.

So, when the chance to work in security for the district arose, Cazares didn’t hesitate to join the 91ֱ�� security department.

“I grew up in the city,” said Cazares, who is a corporal with the patrol division. “I grew up in the schools in Arlington, and I come from a law enforcement background. When I was looking to get back into law enforcement, I found this was a good opportunity for me to give a little back to the school district and community. ����’s been great so far.”

Cazares has now been with the district for more than three years and loves the impact he gets to make with students and staff.

“Interacting with the students is my favorite part,” he said. “We primarily deal with the elementary-level students on patrol. I enjoy interacting with them, getting to know them. If they come in with a question or have an issue, I can be a mentor for them. ����’s more that I like that authority role about it. The students, even though we’re security, they look up to us.”

Bus drivers impact students every day

Bus drivers play a crucial role in the education of students in the 91ֱ��.

Every day.

“We’re the first ones the students see in the morning besides mom, and that smile counts,” said Tomica Gray, a 28-year veteran in the 91ֱ�� transportation department. “It takes the students a long way.”

Gray is now the transportation department’s assistant safety tech, but she spent most of her career driving a school bus. So, she knows.

Without bus drivers, students don’t get to school. And they don’t get the transportation they need to experience the incredible future-building opportunities that are available at the 91ֱ�� Career + Tech Center or the Agriculture Science Center or anywhere else in the district and beyond. They don’t get to compete in sports or travel to play in concerts. And the list goes on and on.

But with bus drivers, the 55,000-plus students in the 91ֱ�� have access to an incredible education and limitlessly bright future.

“It takes special people to drive your buses,” Gray said. “And they’re good kind of people.”

Bus drivers are the kind of people who love kids and love making a lasting impact in their lives. And, of course, they’re good drivers.

Johanna Voigt made personalized Christmas tree ornaments for all her students this year.

That’s how much she loves her students – and her job.

Voigt is a classroom assistant for the first and second grade classes in the French track at 91ֱ��’s Wimbish World Language Academy.��

����’s a job she hadn’t originally planned on, but it’s one she would gladly recommend to others.

“Go for it,” she said to anyone who might consider a career as a classroom assistant.

Voigt always liked working with kids but knew that teaching wasn’t for her. So, she ended up working in the hospitality industry. But that’s a career with crazy work hours, late nights and work on weekends and holidays. Not easy for a mother.

After being a stay-at-home mom for five years, Voigt decided she needed a job that was more family-friendly. And she found it at her son’s school.

��“Working at my son's school was the perfect place,” she said. “As a classroom assistant, I work the same hours that my son attends school, so we drive together in the AM and PM and get summers off together (plus or minus a few days).”

The job also fulfills her love for working with kids.

“I love getting to know the students, being able to work with them and watch them learn and grow,” she said. “It's like being a teacher, just without all the extra responsibilities and work (like lesson planning and grading). Also, working alongside some amazing teachers and helping them makes their days a little easier.”

A nearly 20% hike in pay in just one year? Where does that happen?

It just happened in the 91ֱ�� for new bus drivers and food service leads. And starting substitute teacher pay just got bumped up, too.

The 91ֱ�� is hosting an all-positions job expo from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Wednesday, June 15 at Sam Houston High School.

This expo is designed to meet people at the job they want, whether your dream is to be a full-time teacher or a substitute teacher in one of the highest-paying districts in the Metroplex.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone seeking a career in education,” said 91ֱ�� assistant superintendent of human resources Scott Kahl. “We’ve really put everything under one roof. We are filling openings from teachers and administrators to teaching assistants, bus drivers, custodians, food service, security, grounds and administrative staff. If you want to discover all the different positions available in a school district, this expo is for you. ��We’ve got openings throughout the system and people ready to help you take the next step.” ��

Teachers joining the 91ֱ�� come to a district that pays first-year teachers $60,400 and has given full-time employees raises of 4% percent for those on the teacher salary scale each of the last three years.

The 91ֱ�� also offers overtime opportunities for hourly employees as well as year-round pay and flexible scheduling.

There will be 91ֱ�� employees on-site to assist you in applying for jobs. There will also be hiring managers and representatives for different departments at the expo for on-the-spot interviews.

The food and nutrition services department is hosting a job fair this Saturday, April 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as the district looks to fill vacancies. The job fair will be at our food and nutrition services office at .

The district is looking for full and part-time food service specialists, food service leads and more.

“Our team plays a vital role in the education process by helping to make sure students are ready to learn,” said David Lewis, 91ֱ��’s director of food and nutrition services. “We are looking to grow our team with team members who have a spirit of service and who are passionate about the well-being of children in our community.”

That’s why the district has a leadership pathway set up for teachers that will support them whether they want to be leaders in the classroom, grade level, district level or even advance beyond the classroom and move into new roles.

“We know we have so much untapped talent in our district, and we wanted to make sure we had a formalized way to tap into talent in our system across the board,” said Dr. A. Tracie Brown, 91ֱ��’s chief schools officer. “No matter what role you’re in, we want to grow and develop every single person. We know that teachers make the most impact on what happens in the classroom. The better we can produce great leaders in the classroom, the better outcomes we will have for our kids.”

That’s why the district started ASPIRE, its formalized leadership pathway. Teachers in the 91ֱ�� can become department leads, level leads and model teachers all with the support of the district. There are also leadership academies that help teachers move from the classroom into roles like deans, assistant principals and principals.

Who said the road to becoming a teacher had to be straight and narrow?

Just ask Burgin Elementary School second-grade teacher Tryniti Johnson.

The former speech therapist wanted to make a bigger impact on children, so she decided to change careers and take her talents to the classroom.

“����’s been amazing,” said Johnson. “I feel like each year I grow, get better and become more confident with my teaching practices. Understanding how to teach and reach my students is an area that I’ve grown the most in.”

She credits supportive administrators and mentors that helped throughout her transition from one-on-one interactions with students to full classrooms.

The district’s annual teacher job fair returns to its traditional in-person format on Saturday, April 23, with a job fair at the Dan Dipert Career and Technical Center.

Representatives from every 91ֱ�� campus will be on hand to meet with teaching candidates at the fair that runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The district has openings in elementary, junior high and high school.

In addition to bringing resumes and wearing comfortable shoes, attendees should be prepared to have their lives changed that day. There’s a chance for on-the-spot interviews for candidates as well as the potential to receive a conditional offer at the job fair.

Parking will be available in the front and back lots of the CTC. Remote parking will be available at Rankin Elementary. Please do not park on the streets in neighborhoods adjacent to the CTC as towing is enforced by the city of Arlington.

Are you Called?

Alyssa Gilmore was born to be a teacher. Well, maybe she wasn’t born to be a teacher,�� but it didn’t take her long to realize that’s what she wanted to do with her life.

“My bedroom was set up as a classroom starting in kindergarten,” she said. “One side was a whiteboard, and one side was a chalkboard and my grandma gave me this old student desk. I had chalkboard paint on my wall, and I’d use that as a chalkboard. Teachers would give their extra worksheets, and I’d go home and play with them. I’ve always loved it.”

Gilmore got her first chance to be in a real classroom last spring when she began substitute teaching in the 91ֱ��. ����’s been the perfect fit for Gilmore.

Follow Your Passion

She’s an education major at the University of Texas at Arlington. Her mom is a teacher at Ashworth Elementary and her sister is a teacher at Duff Elementary, which is where Gilmore has done most of her subbing.

“I thought being a substitute would be a great experience in the classroom,” said Gilmore, who graduated from Martin High School. “It would allow me to see what teachers do, what life is like and also give me really good experience with all different grade levels to figure out where I feel comfortable. I thought it would really be a great idea.”

Gilmore, whose goal is to be a teacher in the 91ֱ��, has gotten everything she wanted out the experience.

“Going into it, I was a little bit, not necessarily hesitant but I was worried,” she said. “Do I have the abilities? Am I going to get nervous? I think I’ve gained a lot of confidence from getting to substitute inside the classroom because it’s really allowed me to see what life is going to be like when I become a teacher.”

She will make the transition to student teaching this spring and graduate from UTA in May. She said she’s going to be better prepared for her teaching career because of what she’s learned subbing in the 91ֱ��.

“I haven’t experienced subbing anywhere else,” she said. “I felt most comfortable in Arlington and that’s where I wanted to start because my experience here growing up and when it comes to teaching I would love to teach in 91ֱ��.”

Hale Elementary teacher comes home to teach

Lacy Gregory wasn’t even sure she wanted to be a teacher when she was deciding on a career.

Now she can’t imagine doing anything else.

“I always say that teaching found me,” Gregory said. “I was actually interested in a career in school counseling. I got a job as a literacy aide in a nearby school district from my college just to check out what it was like to work at a school. And I immediately fell in love with working with the kids.”

Gregory has been with the 91ֱ�� for three years, teaching first grade at Hale Elementary. If you’re like her and love working with kids, then circle April 17 on your calendar. Gregory certainly feels at home in the 91ֱ��. She went to elementary and junior high in Arlington before moving to Virginia.

That time as a literacy aide changed her outlook on teaching.

“I immediately fell in love with working with the kids,” she said. “I quickly realized that there was a way to make such a big, direct impact as a classroom teacher. I got to working on it right away.”

She’s made an impact since returning to the 91ֱ��, too. She did story time with her students along with her dog when classes were virtual at the end of the 2019-20 school year. She also isn’t afraid to put herself out there, wearing an inflatable dinosaur costume to reach her first graders.

“My favorite part of teaching is just the relationship with all the kids,” Gregory said. “They have the ability to make your day so much brighter and when you say something funny and they laugh and you overhear that student say, ‘Oh she’s so funny’ or ‘I just love her,’ it’s just the greatest feeling in the world to know you’ve created a space where kids want to be and you want to be there, too.”

While Gregory got her start in teaching in Virginia, it was her time as a student in Arlington that she remembered. When it was time for her and her husband to make a move, she knew where she wanted to teach.

“I already knew the type of people that were invested in the students in this district, and I wanted to be one of them,” she said. “For me, I’ve always said home is people not places. This, to me, felt very homey to me just because of all the teachers I had.”

91ֱ�� Recognizes Maintenance and Operations Staff

Thanks to a group of unsung heroes, the 91ֱ��’s operations and maintenance personnel (super crew), 91ֱ�� schools are continuing to be cleaned and maintained throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Though school buildings are closed, 27 campuses are providing meals for children each week, and all campuses still require maintenance and cleaning on a daily basis.

����’s a huge job made even more important – and risky – by the coronavirus. But the job is not only being done, it’s being done exceptionally well.

“Our task is a simple one – we are here to serve,” said Kelly Horn, 91ֱ�� executive director of facility services. “Our folks have tirelessly reported for work every day as critical and essential members of the team.”��

The super crew, from custodians to maintenance technicians, often do their work when no one else is around to see it. But their work is foundational to everything the district does. The entire community relies on and benefits from their service.

“We owe a tremendous thank you to our operations and maintenance personnel for the incredible job they always do, but even more so right now during COVID-19,” said 91ֱ�� Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos. “Though we always depend on them, now, more than ever, the work they are doing is critically essential. Without them, our school district simply couldn’t function.”

These employees are extremely hardworking and serve selflessly and professionally.

“They are some of the most generous and caring people that you will ever meet,” Horn said.�� “I am blessed to call them my team!”

Many also have children in 91ֱ�� schools, which makes the job even more personal.��

“Keeping our buildings safe matters to them,” Horn said.��“They clean and maintain our schools during the day, then go home to care for their family and help with home school at night.”��

By the Numbers

• 120 – The 91ֱ�� has 120 custodians (out of 436 operations personnel during normal operations) on duty each day during the COVID-19 closure. The schools offering student meals require thorough cleaning each day. In addition, the district has one or more custodians stationed at each school daily to monitor the facilities and provide localized disinfection services whenever someone enters the buildings.
• 60 – The 91ֱ�� has 60 maintenance technicians (out of 160 technicians during normal operations) on duty each day during the COVID-19 closure. They have continued the normal maintenance routine, including groundskeeping. In addition, they are taking advantage of the empty school buildings to service all HVAC systems and change out all filters. They are also investigating potential excessive water usage and leaks.
• 27 – The 91ֱ�� continues to provide meals for students each week from 27 campuses spread across the district. Those schools, and particularly their kitchens, require thorough cleaning each day.
• 1,178,698 – This is the number of meals that the 91ֱ�� has provided to children in the community during the COVID-19 closure as of May 15. None of these meals would have been possible without the support and cleaning provided by the custodial staff.
• 77 – There are 77 school campuses in the district plus administrative and service buildings, and each one still requires regular maintenance, even when students and teachers aren’t in the buildings.

Keeping schools clean

Even before COVID-19, the 91ֱ�� had a high standard for cleanliness executed daily by the operations team.

“We approach cleaning the buildings with the same mindset that we have always had: a clean, well-maintained building is a safe building,” Horn said. “Our students and staff deserve a clean, well-maintained, safe building to learn and work in daily.”

In fact, three years ago – long before COVID-19 – the AISD added a disinfectant misting program to its cleaning process to guarantee germs get killed and schools are thoroughly clean.

Those practices and standards ensured the district was prepared when coronavirus struck.

“We still clean thoroughly from top to bottom, but during the current situation with COVID-19, we are focusing on a more aggressive and frequent process of disinfecting touchpoints like door handles, door jambs, light switches, counter tops and restroom fixtures,” Horn said.

A round of applause

Despite their importance and value to the district, the operations and maintenance employees rarely receive the thanks and recognition they deserve.

But we can change that.

“Let’s let them know that we see the work they are doing, and we know how important it is,” Cavazos said. “We are so grateful not only for the jobs they do, but for who they are, and for how they do their jobs with such great devotion and excellence.”
