Medical leave itself is unpaid. However, employees must use any available accrued leave (including state, local, compensatory, or vacation leave) to continue receiving pay during their absence. Once all accrued leave has been exhausted, the employee will enter a “dock” status, meaning they will no longer receive pay for the duration of the leave.

No. District policy requires any employee who is absent for more than three consecutive workdays due to a qualifying medical reason to apply for medical leave. Employees may not opt to use personal leave in place of following the medical leave process.

AISD offers up to 3 consecutive days of paid bereavement leave, provided the definition of immediate family as outlined in board policy DEC (LOCAL) is met. Please contact your supervisor with additional questions.

Employees can request medical leave up to 30 days in advance, if foreseeable.

Once you request medical leave, the HR Leaves team will send paperwork to your AISD email address. This will include forms that you must complete, as well as forms that your healthcare provider must complete and return. Please note that we can only accept the official paperwork provided by AISD at the time you request leave. Other versions of medical leave paperwork should not be submitted.

The duration of your medical leave is determined by your healthcare provider. This information is communicated to the HR Leaves team through the medical documentation they complete and submit.

Leave for non-medical or non-qualifying reasons requires approval from your supervisor and must be covered using your available leave accruals. Please reach out to your supervisor for guidance and approval.

HR Leaves does not oversee your leave accrual. For questions related to your leave balance, please contact the Payroll Department.

If you continue to receive a paycheck from AISD, your benefit premiums will be deducted as usual. However, if you run out of paid leave and no longer receive a paycheck—or if your paycheck is not enough to cover the full cost of your premiums—you will be responsible for paying the premiums out of pocket. HR Benefits will send you an invoice with the amount due and payment instructions.
